How to Recognise UK Traffic Signs
Most warning signs are triangular with a red border. Circular signs usually give orders: red circles show restrictions, while blue circles normally state a positive instruction. Rectangular signs provide information or directions. Always read the whole sign and consider any distance, time or vehicle restrictions shown underneath it.
- Red triangles: warnings about hazards or changing road conditions
- Red circles: prohibitions and restrictions
- Blue circles: mandatory instructions
- Rectangles: directions, route information and local facilities
Practise Signs During Driving Lessons
Knowing a sign is only the first step. A safe driver must notice it early and respond smoothly. During lessons, practise scanning ahead for signs, road markings and changes in traffic conditions. Your instructor can explain unfamiliar signs and help you plan the correct action in good time.
